Dusty bristled. “Why is everyone so interested in my love life? I've been back for less than an hour and we’re talking about whether I should mate again, only five short months after I lost the love of my life.” He stood and stomped around the tree, not sure where he meant to go, ending up back where he started. “Damn it! Who does she think she is, anyway? Coming into my life all tempting and seductive with her pearly eyes, and satin skin and that wild hair….”
She’s got you bad, Bamboo said.
“I’m just confused.” He slumped down next to Holly and leaned into Bamboo, drawing on the calm he could always count on finding from his friend. The two of them had been wandering the forest together for months and Dusty hadn’t missed home or his friends once as long as Bamboo was around. He had healed the anguish in Dusty’s heart almost as if he had Dusty’s power to mesmerize the pain away.
Holly rubbed his back. “I’m sorry, Dusty. This can’t be easy. But everything will work out for the best.”
Didn’t I tell you not too long ago that you never know what life’s got in store for you? Bamboo’s chuckle echoed in Dusty’s mind. Looks like life’s pulled a fast one on you, Dusty.

I love that line. And I really like Bamboo being the voice of reason and comfort here. :)
The essence of friendship seems to be encapsulated in this work. I can hear the kindly laughter in the last line of dialogue.
This was very good, Bamboo is a great character.
Cute! I love the silent, talking Bamboo. Ever hear of Fup, the cat from Powell's bookstore?
Love it. I want more! I really like the use of "mate." A tad strange but it seems to resonate with the world and work.
This was definitely short and sweet... I want to read the rest now... :(
That was a great ending! Thanks so much for participating!
Very earthy and primal. I feel for the guy...love the line about her wild hair.
I liked the way he drew calm from the cat. A very nice little snippet. the world and the main character (and the cat) were well drawn even in this small section :)
